  13. _Vocabulary Building in Indonesian_ is a collection of Indonesian
  14. reading passages grouped around nine subject areas and coupled with
  15. exercises designed to improve the reader's vocabulary in both size and
  16. accuracy.  The nine subjects covered are anthropology, language and
  17. literature, art, religion, education, population, agriculture, economics
  18. and politics.  There are four passages on each subject, the first two
  19. specially written for the book and the other two taken from existing
  20. literature in Indonesian.  Following each passage is: a list of words to
  21. help the reader with the passage; a set of questions on the text, in
  22. Indonesian and to be answered with Indonesian sentences; examples of
  23. usage for sets of words with overlapping/contrasting semantics (or, in
  24. some cases, similar sounds); explanation of subtle points of grammar
  25. where mistakes are often made; and a set of exercises where the reader
  26. is tested on the preceding by having to choose the appropriate word to
  27. complete sentences.

  29. _Vocabulary Building in Indonesian_ is aptly titled, and I'm finding it
  30. an extremely effective (and enjoyable) way of expanding my vocabulary
  31. and improving my understanding of my existing vocabulary (I'm a third of
  32. the way through it at the moment).  This may, however, reflect my
  33. personal interests; someone without an interest in the social sciences
  34. might find the passages boring and some of the vocabulary esoteric.
  35. _Vocabulary Building in Indonesian_ was obviously printed from typed
  36. copy, giving it that uniformity of formatting which yells "academic
  37. monograph".  Unlike many such, however, it is clearly laid out and
  38. carefully edited, and is a very good demonstration of how one doesn't
  39. need a multiplicity of fonts and fancy graphics to produce an elegant
  40. and effective document.
